Chocolate & Banana Irish-Style Soda Bread
A humble Irish classic turned into pure cozy bliss
There’s something magical about a grey afternoon when the house smells like warm bread and melting chocolate. This soda bread is exactly that mood — no effort, no waiting, just comfort in the oven within minutes. It keeps the soul of Irish brown soda bread but leans toward dessert, with ripe banana and real Belgian dark chocolate folded straight into the dough.
Ingredients
1 pack Sean’s brown soda bread mix
Buttermilk (as indicated on the mix)
1 ripe banana, cut into small chunks
100 g bar of Belgian 70% dark chocolate, chopped into rough shards
3 tablespoons caster sugar
Butter — to grease the baking dish
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
2. Rub your baking dish generously with butter soda bread needs a rustic crust.
3. In a bowl, mix the soda bread mix, buttermilk and caster sugar.
4. Fold in the banana chunks and chocolate shards, don’t overmix; rustic is the point.
5. Transfer into the buttered dish.
6. Bake for 40 minutes at 180 °C until the top is firm and crackled and the bread is well raised. Stick a knife in the middle to see if it comes out dry
To serve
Best enjoyed warm, sliced thick, with good salted butter melting into it.
Perfect with a proper hot chocolate.
